Clemson grabs first win over North Carolina since 2010

WPDE/Clemson grabs big win over North Carolina to help their cause for the ACC Regular season title.

CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson University men’s basketball drained 15 triples and downed No. 19 North Carolina 82-78 on Tuesday night in front of another raucous crowd in Littlejohn Coliseum.

Marcquise Reed led the team in points (20), rebounds (8) and assists (5). Reed also finished a perfect 7-for-7 at the charity stripe.

Gabe DeVoe shot the lights out again, finishing with 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting and five threes. Shelton Mitchell poured in 14, while Elijah Thomas finished with 11 points and six blocked shots.

With the score knotted at 74-74, the Tigers (18-4, 7-3 ACC) executed a tremendous late game play to get Reed open on the near side wing for a wide open three, which he drilled for a 77-74 lead.

After a defensive stop, Clemson came back down the floor and found Thomas underneath to push the lead to five with just 29 seconds left. The Tar Heels (16-7, 5-5 ACC) got two late buckets, but the Tigers hit three free throws to seal the victory.

Clemson’s 15 3-pointers are now tied for third all-time in program history and are the most made by a Tigers squad during head coach Brad Brownell’s tenure at Clemson.

The Tigers will return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 3 when it travels to Wake Forest for an afternoon tip at 2 p.m.
