Birds' bats quiet in 3-2 defeat to Buies Creek

WPDE/Pelicans fall to Buies Creek in game one.

LILLINGTON, N.C. (April 10, 2017) – Casey Bloomquist, Jordan Minch and Craig Brooks all pitched well, but the Myrtle Beach Pelicans offense mustered just two hits while striking out 16 times in Monday’s 3-2 loss to the Buies Creek Astros at Jim Perry Stadium.

With the score tied at two, Johnny Sewald began the fifth inning with a double against Bloomquist, the Pelicans’ (3-2) starter. A Stijn Van Der Meer ground out pushed Sewald to third before Jason Martin knocked the run in with an RBI single to make it 3-2 Astros (5-0).

Bloomquist did not walk a batter in his five innings of work, yielding three runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Minch retired all five batters he faced and Brooks pitched 1.1 shutout innings.

From there, the Buies Creek bullpen dominated. In relief, Yoanys Quiala (1-0) whiffed eight batters in four innings of one-hit ball. Riley Ferrell then worked a perfect ninth with two more strikeouts for his second save.

Myrtle Beach was able to mount a two-out rally to get on the board in the first. Trent Giambrone and Eddy Martinez each walked with two outs against Astros starter Framber Valdez, who issued four free passes while whiffing six in four innings of one-hit work. An error then loaded the bases before Valdez issued a wild pitch that allowed Giambrone to score the game’s first run.

In the bottom of the first inning, Myles Straw single with one out before moving to second on a Kyle Tucker ground out. The next batter was Christian Correa, who doubled to left to bring in Straw and tie the game

The Pelicans would again grab the advantage in the fourth. Tyler Pearson reached on an error to begin the frame before Jesse Hodges walked. Two batters later, a Buies Creek error scored Pearson from second to vault the Birds ahead at 2-1.

However, once again, the Astros struck quickly in return. Tucker singled and stole second to start the bottom of the fourth. Two batters later, he raced in to score on Ryne Birk’s RBI single to knot the score at two.

The middle game of this three-game series pits Myrtle Beach RHP Adbert Alzolay (1-0, 3.60 ERA) against Buies Creek RHP Elieser Hernandez (1-0, 11.57 ERA). First pitch is at 7 p.m., and coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on, the MiLB First Pitch app and TuneIn.
