Coastal Carolina’s Jason Bilous Earns Sun Belt Weekly Honor

WPDE/Jason Bilous named Conference pitcher of the week.

CONWAY – Coastal Carolina junior Jason Bilous was voted the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance in a 4-0 victory over then West Division leader Little Rock this past Friday.

Bilous (Wilmington, Del.) struck out a career-high 11 over seven innings and improved to 7-2 on the season. He only walked one batter – the first batter of the game, surrendered just two hits and only two Trojans reached second base – one on a CCU error. Overall, he struck out at least one batter in each of his seven innings, including two each in the first, second, third and seventh innings.

Bilous enters the final weekend of the regular season first in the Sun Belt (14th in the NCAA) in fewest hits allowed per nine innings pitched (5.5), first in lowest opponent batting average (.183), second in strikeouts (90), third in strikeouts per nine innings (11.25) and third in ERA (3.00).

On the CCU single-season list, his .183 opponent batting average is second only to CCU All-American Mike Morrison’s .169 opponent batting average during the 2016 season. He is only 10 strikeouts from becoming the ninth Chanticleer to record 100 strikeouts in a season. (Scott Sturkie accomplished it three times, Ron Deubel twice and Steven Carter twice with the others being Rhett Johnson, Alex Cunningham, Anthony Meo, Cody Wheeler and Randy Stokes.)

For his career, Bilous is 13-5 with 197 strikeouts in 169.1 innings. Opponents only have a .225 batting average off him for his career, which currently ranks fourth-best in CCU history, and his 10.47 career strikeouts per nine innings ranks third.

Coastal Carolina, which has clinched the top seed to the Sun Belt Tournament, will close the regular season at Appalachian State. Bilous will start game one of the series on Thursday (May 17) at 6 pm. Game two on Friday (May 18) is set for 6 pm, which is a change from the original schedule. The series will conclude Saturday (May 19) with a 1 pm first pitch.
