'This is medicine': Men can get pregnant, Planned Parenthood doctor tells Congress

SOCIAL VALUES: Dr. Bhavik Kumar, 31, listens to a question from a patient seeking an abortion during her ultrasound at the Whole Woman's Health clinic in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday, June 3, 2016. Women considering abortion are required by the state to have a sonogram that they must be offered the chance to view, although they can refuse to look. There is then a required 24-hour waiting period after the initial consultation. Some must travel long distances twice in order to complete the procedure. This patient, who was 6-weeks pregnant and has a previous child, took the sonogram photograph home with her and scheduled the abortion procedure for the next day. In order to serve the women who depend on a dwindling number of abortion providers in Texas, Kumar commutes across the state to clinics in San Antonio and Fort Worth. "We know the need is there," says Kumar. "I feel morally and ethically obligated to do this work." (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)

Planned Parenthood doctor Bhavik Kumar said men can get pregnant and give birth during a Congressional hearing on Thursday.

Dr. Kumar, can biological men become pregnant and give birth?" Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., asked Kumar during a Thursday hearing, held in the Democrat-led Oversight and Reform Committee.
Um...so, men can have pregnancies, especially trans men," Kumar responded.

So are you saying that a biological female who identifies as a man and therefore becomes pregnant is quote 'a man?'" Clyde followed up. "Is that what you're saying?"
Somebody with a uterus may have the capability of becoming pregnant whether they're a woman or a man, that doesn't make a difference, not every person with a uterus has the ability to become pregnant," Kumar responded. "This is medicine."

Kumar also criticized Clyde's questioning for being off-topic. The hearing was about abortion.

I can't believe it’s necessary to say this, but men cannot get pregnant and cannot give birth, regardless of how they identify themselves," Clyde shot back. "Why in the world would Democrats have brought in a person whose title is 'director of trans care' for an abortion hearing when only biological women can become pregnant?"

Senate Democrats rejected a GOP amendment that would have clarified only women can get pregnant, according to Sen. Marco Rubio.

Federal funding should reflect reality: only women can get pregnant. Unfortunately, it looks like my Democrat colleagues don't trust 'the science' after all," Rubio said last month.

According to Berkley Law Professor Khiara Bridges, "Many women, cis women, have the capacity for pregnancy. Many cis women do not have the capacity for pregnancy. There are also trans men who are capable of pregnancy as well as non-binary people who are capable of pregnancy."
