Police: Couple forced baby to do push-ups and sit-ups, spanked him for crying
ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) - An Altoona, Pa., couple is facing charges of child abuse after a police discovered bruising on a 1-year-old child.
According to a report, a doctor noticed bruising on the infant's head, arms, back, hips, buttocks and thighs and said that those injuries have no medical explanation.
Police said they then went to interview the mother, Morgan Porter, and her fiance, Devin Heintzelman.
Police said that the two both admitted to spanking the child for minor infractions such as crying, fussing and other normal behaviors for a 1-year-old.
One witness told police that she saw Heintzelman paddle the child for drooling on himself at 8 months old.
According to the complaint, Heintzelman, a Marine in the Marine Corps, had the child attempt to do push-ups and sit-ups.
According to police, in a separate interview, Porter said in addition to sometimes spanking the child, she would leave him to be alone without supervision for lengthy periods of time.
As a result of the investigation, Porter has been charged with aggravated assault of a victim less than 6 years old, simple assault of a victim under 12 and endangering the welfare of a child.
She has a hearing scheduled for Jan. 24.
Heintzelman currently has a warrant out for his arrest and is facing the same charges as Porter.
