Arena football coming to Myrtle Beach

Arena football is coming to Myrtle Beach next year.

A news conference was held Monday in Myrtle Beach to formally announce that a new X-League team called the Myrtle Beach Freedom will begin playing its home games in March at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

The X-League is going into its third season of professional indoor football.

The league played this past season with 10 teams in eight states. The league is adding two expansion teams, including Myrtle Beach for the coming season.

"The Myrtle Beach Freedom arena football team has been a vision for years and to see it become a reality is an incredibly exciting moment and is absolutely surreal," said Owner Ronnie McCuin. "Our goal is to provide a fun, affordable, family-friendly atmosphere to Myrtle Beach and the surrounding areas for years to come while winning championships. Myrtle Beach is a thriving area that offers many events and entertainment to the many locals as well as thousands of tourists that visit each year. There are currently no professional football teams in South Carolina, so what better place than the beach."

The league plays its championship game each June.

This isn't the first time the city of Myrtle Beach has had an arena football team. About 10 years ago, the Myrtle Beach Stingrays played one season on the Grand Strand.
