WASHINGTON (TND) — President Joe Biden is slated to sign the Respect for Marriage Act Tuesday, and he is expected to do so alongside a New York City drag performer named Marti Gould Cummings.

To be a non binary drag artist invited to the White House is something I never imagined would happen,” Cummings wrote in a tweet, alongside an image of the invitation they received.
Thank you President & Dr. Biden for inviting me to this historic bill signing,” the drag artist continued in their tweet. “Grateful doesn’t begin to express the emotions I feel.”

The bill signing Cummings is expected to attend will codify the federal government’s recognition of same-sex and interracial marriages. It was passed with the help of 39 Republicans in the House and 12 in the Senate.

Cummings is an advocate for LGBT youth and performs drag shows open to children, a point of contention between critics who believe such performances sexualize children, and proponents who believe the performances are important to building LGBT equality.

During a 2019 TEDx Talk, Cummings promoted drag as a leadership model for kids.

For me, drag has always been about leadership. About being a leader and being a role model. Being able to be a leader and a role model for these kids,” Cummings told the audience.

During the talk, Cummings described a “Drag Brunch” they performed at, during which kids as young as two-years-old were in attendance, the drag performer pointed out.

So, a lot of times, families come to the brunch because they’re not able to go to a regular drag show late at night and it’s a time that kids can experience drag,” Cummings said following a quick video from one of her all-ages drag performances.

In 2021, Cummings launched an unsuccessful bid for city council in New York’s Seventh District and lost by a landslide in the Democratic primary race, according to Ballotpedia.

During Cummings's campaign for public office, defunding the police was a major part of their platform, according to Fox News, which reportedly found a litany of social media posts bashing the police.

F*** the police,” Cummings tweeted back in 2020, according to Fox News.
Yes we want to defund police. Yes we want to abolish ICE. No we won’t settle for anything less and will continue to fight for this to happen,” Cummings reportedly added in a separate post less than 24 hours later.
