The road that goes near former Lake Busbee on US 501 Bypass in Conway remains closed as of 11:45 p.m. Friday, after being closed without warning Thursday night.

Friday afternoon, the City of Conway posted on its Facebook page that SCDOT has closed Hwy 501 Bypass for the remainder of the day.

SCDOT officials later said they hoped to get the road open in both directions by 9 p.m., but that did not happen.

As you can see in the Facebook Live below, done around 1:30 p.m. Friday, traffic was at a standstill with some people moving only two miles in three hours.

SCDOT said the closure is required to complete the flood protection.

One of our crews was driving through the area Thursday night when they learned the road was now completely blocked off.

Drivers spent as much as six hours traveling from Myrtle Beach to Conway Friday afternoon.

Many said they were on their way to or from work or a doctor's appointment.

"I'm a native, I'm here from Conway, I've never experienced this in all my life," Maria Gaither said.

Officials ask you to please stay off the roads unless it is absolutely necessary.

There is still no word on when the road will re-open.
