Second man arrested for attempted armed robbery of Surfside Beach Pharmacy

Gary Allen Hammel (Surfside Beach Police Department)

A second arrest has been made in the November attempted armed robbery of a local pharmacy.

Gary Allen Hammel, 48, of Murrells Inlet, is charged with attempted armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and conspiracy to commit kidnapping and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in connection with the Nov. 6 incident, according to a news release from Surfside Beach police.

Just before 6 p.m. on that day, police say two masked suspects ran into the pharmacy, threatened the pharmacy owner with a gun, and then ran away when he pulled his own gun in response, according to a news release from Surfside Beach police.

Surfside Beach Pharmacy owner Daniel Bundrick released surveillance video from the incident in hopes of finding the people responsible.

Richard Allen Ray, 58, of Murrells Inlet, was arrested earlier this week in connection with the crime.

"Those who would victimize our residents and visitors should see this as evidence that the Surfside Beach Police Department is dedicated to bringing them to justice," said police chief Kenneth Hofmann.
