If you hit a pothole in South Carolina and it damages your car, you may have the option to get reimbursed for damages, from the South Carolina Dept. of Transpiration.

SCDOT says from 2017 to 2018, the department paid $207,470 for damage claims.

The department says that’s the most accurate year because drivers have one year to file the claim, so the number for 2018-2019 changes daily. They say that number does not include what the state’s insurance company has paid.

If you hit a pothole, in order to get that money, you should follow the following steps:

  • First, you need to pull over and take pictures of the pothole, the damage to your car, and any road signs or landmarks; the more proof the better.
  • Then, you need to get two estimates and receipts of the repair work needed or done.
  • After that, you can submit a claim to the state for reimbursement.
  • You must be the registered owner of the vehicle and provide a copy of your registration to the state to get reimbursed.
