'Scary' moment as Socastee teen finds body off Peachtree Road
Myrtle Beach, S.C. —
Neighbors along Julious Lane and Peachtree Road in Socastee are looking for answers after police found a body in a nearby ditch Saturday morning.
It was a morning 13-year-old Anthony Lemay probably won't forget.
The teenager usually rides his bike around his neighboring development and sometimes along Peachtree Road. He was out pedaling at 7 o'clock Saturday morning, when he noticed a black sneaker along the side of the road.
"I was like, 'Okay, cool, free shoe. I'm about to go check it out,'" he said. "Walk over, I'm looking for another shoe and I look in the ditch and I just find a man."
The coroner's office has yet to identify the body. Lemay said it was in bad shape. He said it appeared red and bloated, and looked to be an adult.
"I know I'm just a kid," he said. "But I think probably 30, 33-years-old. That's my guess."
South Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating who the victim is and what happened.
"I don't know how to explain it...it was...scary," said Lemay.
The situation left neighbors and the teen with lots of questions. They're all still eagerly waiting for answers.
"(It was) very surprising to see that on this road. Cause things like that normally don't happen," he said.
The coroner's office has yet to release information on the identity of the victim.
