Five hurt after 'altercation' at state prison in Bennettsville

Three inmates at Evans Correctional Institution in Bennettsville were hurt during an altercation Tuesday morning and two employees were injured while responding to the incident, according to Jeffrey M. Taillon with the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

Taillon said:

During the inmate altercation three inmates were injured, two were treated onsite and one was transported for outside medical attention.
No employees were assaulted during the altercation. However, two employees suffered minor injuries, which occurred when responding to the incident.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections said, after the fight, "in half of a housing unit, inmates are refusing to return to their cells."

A spokesman said all of the other housing units were secured and there was no threat to the public.

As of about 3:45 p.m., Evans Correctional Institution was declared "fully secured."
