PDRTA named state transit provider of the year
The Pee Dee Regional Transportation Authority (PDRTA) has been named the 2018 South Carolina Transit Authority of the Year by the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
PDRTA has really worked to turn things around after nearly collapsing due to financial problems back in 2013.
That's when the Transportation Authority cut nearly 70 percent of its budget due to revenue shortfalls that resulted in the loss of about 70 jobs and services.
Cities and counties in the Pee Dee increased their funding for PDRTA to help the then struggling organization.
Pee Dee Regional Transportation Authority Executive Director Charles MacNeil said the community's support has made a tremendous difference for the organization's survival.
"It was only made so because of the tremendous for support we received from the community. And as indicative of today's recognition, partners like City of Florence and many private entities, in the community, have really stepped forward because they recognize the return on the investment," said MacNeil.
The Transportation Authority makes about 435,000 trips a year through its scheduled routes and demand responses.
The authority receives federal and state grants primarily for capital equipment such as vehicles, according to its website.
It says federal and state grants require a percentage of matching funds.
Since 1976, PDRTA has provided services in Florence, Darlington, Dillon, Marion, Marlboro and Chesterfield Counties.
