Man suffers double amputation after incident parasailing in Myrtle Beach

(WPDE)

One person had to be transported with "severe injuries" after a water rescue near 3rd Avenue South in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday, according to Lt. Evans with Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue.

The man was transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center for treatment and Lt. James B. Zorn with the U.S. Coast Guard said both of the man's legs had to be amputated.

Zorn said the incident happened while the man was moving from a parasailing vessel to a banana boat. The man fell into the water and was hit by the propellers from the boat, he said.

The commercial parasailing operation was "un-inspected," according to Zorn, but he said that is not required for boats carrying fewer than six people.

The Coast Guard will investigate to determine what caused the incident.

Zorn said there were other people on the boats when the incident happened, but he does not know how many.
