One dead in two-vehicle crash in Darlington County

A North Carolina woman was killed in a two-vehicle wreck in Darlington County, according to Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee.

Hardee identified the victim as Cheryl Lynn Meggs, 56, from North Carolina.

She was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Monday evening at the intersection of New Market Road and SC 151.

Cpl. Sonny Collins with South Carolina Highway Patrol told us the driver of a 1999 GMC Sport Utility was driving north-bound when the driver of a 2016 Honda two-door sedan attempted to turn left onto the highway and pulled out in front of the first driver.

The driver of the GMC was taken to a hospital with injuries, and the driver of the Honda, Cheryl Meggs, died on scene.

A 34-year-old man said he arrived on scene minutes after the crash happened. He said he tried to help one of the victims. "Just the thought of what I saw, it was terrifying. We had to be either a minute or two minutes behind the accident. She was an RN nurse. Her badge was on. She had on a scrub uniform. They had to actually cut the woman out of the car, when I leaving the scene. When my heart got too heavy, it was time to leave. I had to leave," he said.

South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck.
