Myrtle Beach gears up to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The 12th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration in Myrtle Beach kicked off tonight at the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce.

The city has a line up of events planned all weekend to commemorate Dr. King's legacy and to live out the dream he saw fit for us all.

Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune said, "When I think about Dr. Kings dream its very similar to the dream I have for Myrtle Beach is that we can be a city that is united in love in peace and that we can always welcome people here and know that they will be treated fairly and equally no matter who they are."

Organizers say its important to celebrate all that Dr. King stood for, so generations to come remember where we've been.

"We've come along ways but we still have a ways to go and we're striving daily to reach that goal, so we still have a ways to go and when everybody comes together work collectively I believe we can achieve that goal," said event planner Reggie Dyson.

Ultimately, organizers say their goal for the weekend honoring Dr. King, rings true to his message.

Reggie Dyson said, "that everybody come together as one, we have a wonderful time there's a lot of events from uh from watching movies, gospel singing a lot of economic development programs I mean its just something for everybody we just ask that everybody come and lets have a good time."
