Battalion Chief Josh Carney, with Midway Fire Rescue, died Thursday morning after a battle with cancer, according to a release from the department.

Carney was battling an aggressive melanoma cancer and was diagnosed in June, the department said.

"Let’s take some relief by knowing that his pain and struggles are over and he is truly in a better place," the release said.

The department said "BC Carney gave us very direct instructions in a letter to 'make sure you are jumping out of your socks to help each other.'"

Arrangements for Carney will be announced over the next several days.
