Mayor John Rhodes hit the gavel for the last time as the Mayor of Myrtle Beach at the city council meeting Tuesday.

Rhodes has served as the mayor for 12 years. He was elected in 2005.

He said his accomplishments during his time as mayor include: Savannah’s Playground in the Market Common, improvements to the boardwalk and introducing the tourism development fund.

"We were able to provide unity within council, we were able to accomplish things, move forward and we have allowed this city, through our work, to progress tremendously," Rhodes said.

In a run-off election in November, Rhodes lost to Brenda Bethune.

Rhodes said he plans to spend his retirement with family and plans to be involved in Myrtle Beach sports tourism.
