Robeson, N.C. (WPDE) — Deputies are investigating a shooting late Friday night on Midway Road in the Rowland community of Robeson County that left one woman in critical condition, according to Major Damien R. McLean with the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.
McLean said, “We did have a shooting last night before midnight and our officers worked diligently throughout the to night to locate the suspect who has a past of being an extremely dangerous person. The suspect surrendered this morning and is being processed at the time."
Purcell Leach, 56, was arrested around 9 a.m. Saturday.
Deputies identified the victim as Carmen Way, 34, of Rowland. She was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition.
Deputies said Leach and Way were involved in an argument prior to the shooting.
A 70-year-old man said he was held at gun point following the shooting and forced to drive Purcell away from the scene, according to a news release.
Leach surrendered Saturday morning. He is charged assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, first degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of firearm by a convicted felon.
He was given a $150,000 secured bond.
Deputies said Leach has a lengthy criminal history dating back to the 1980's.
