A Loris man has been sentenced to 35 years behind bars in a 2016 Christmas Day shooting.

Roger Dale Grate, 53, was found guilty in the death of 40-year-old Darrell Doctor, of Loris, who was found with a gunshot wound to the head late Christmas night on Kennedy Street.

The incident happened during a family gathering, according to assistant solicitor Chris Helms. Helms says evidence gathered showed Grate confronted his step-son, and Doctor went to check on the situation. That's when Grate told Doctor to leave and pulled a gun from his holster, firing a shot, killing him instantly.

“Mr. Doctor did not have to die that night. Certainly, not at the hands of someone he trusted,” Helms said. “We would like to thank the officers with the Horry County Police Department for their hard work because without it justice might not have been served today.”
