Lake View High School football player charged with bringing gun to school

Delvon Tirit Bethea (DCSO)

The Dillon County Sheriff’s Office has charged Delvon Tirit Bethea, 18, with carrying a weapon on to school grounds after officers say he brought a gun to Lake View High School on Wednesday, according to Captain Cliff Arnette with the Dillon County Sheriff's Office.

Bethea, a senior, is a running back and wide receiver for the Lake View Wild Gators football team, according to ABC 15 Sports Director Brandon Dunn.

The gun was found in the school's band room, according to Dillon School District Four Superintendent Ray Rogers, who called it a BB gun.

Arnette said they're working to determine if the weapon was a BB gun or real gun.

Arnette said Lake View High School administration notified the school resource officer about the incident and an investigation led to Bethea's arrest.

Some parents called and asked WPDE to look into the situation, saying they are upset because the district hadn't notified them about it.

Rogers said they take all weapon incidents on school grounds seriously.

He added Bethea has been suspended and could be expelled after a hearing later his month.

Bethea is being held at the Dillon County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

We're waiting to learn if he'll be allowed to play in Friday's game against Baptist Hill.
