Lake City High School senior wins $25,000 Sallie Mae scholarship

One Lake City High School senior is getting a little extra help along the path to college.

Damian Lee was surprised Tuesday with a Bridging the Dream Scholarship from Sallie Mae.

The $25,000 scholarship is awarded to only five students across the U.S. who excel inside and outside the classroom but need financial support to go to college.

Lee is ranked at the top of his class and a member of ROTC. He is also the president of Lake City High School's Ensemble and Gospel Choir and the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Mayor Lovith Anderson presented Lee with a key to the city to accompany the scholarship.

Anderson provided this statement in a press release: "Damian is one of Lake City's best and brightest. The sky is truly the limit, and this scholarship will help him reach college and continue to make Lake City proud. I'm honored to present him with a key to our great city."

Lee says he knew he wanted to go to college but he wasn’t sure how he was going to pay for it.

"I was always telling her, 'Mom, I really wanna go to college,' but I know that the financial part of it would just be a struggle for us. So, I kind of questioned whether or not I’d be able to even attend college, whether or not I was gonna get this scholarship to even afford college," Lee said.

Lee says he wants to attend George Washington University to major in political science.
