Inmates at the Kershaw Correctional Institution caused a minor fire on Sunday at the prison, according to South Carolina Department of Corrections Communications Director Jeffery Taillon.

Several inmates' relatives asked us to look into what was going on, saying they were deeply concerned about their loved ones' safety.

Some of them sent us cell phone video of the fire.

The video is also posted on YouTube.

Taillon released the following statement on the fire: "In response to your inquiry, the dorm was being cleaned after feeding and food containers were piled up to be taken out to the trash. Inmates lit pieces of paper on fire and threw them from their cells into the pile resulting in a small fire. It was quickly extinguished. No injuries resulted from this deliberate action by the inmates."

Kershaw Correctional Institution is a level 2 prison for men.

Some inmates' relatives tell us the prison has been locked down since the April 15 deadly riot at Lee Correctional Institution near Bishopville where seven inmates were killed and 22 others badly hurt.
