Horry County Schools track flu numbers

Leaders in Horry County Schools are tracking student and staff absences in response to the climbing flu numbers across the district.

A spokesperson tells us several schools last week reported more than a 20 percent absence rate, mainly among elementary age students.

"We may not necessarily know exactly why a student or a staff member is absent, but a lot of the time we know it is related to flu like symptoms or the actual flu," said Lisa Bourcier, Director of Strategic Communications & Community Engagement for Horry County Schools.

Leaders say elementary students are vulnerable to germs because they are more likely to touch things.

As for the high schools, staff is focusing on keeping the weight rooms clean.
