Horry County police offers free active shooter, church security training

On Thursday, Horry County police announced free active shooter and church security training.

The department said they want individuals and congregations of all denominations to come together and go through the training.

Authorities say it's important that community members know how to respond if a shooter comes into their house of worship.

Captain Kris Leonhardt will be leading the training. More than 400 people have already gone through a similar training.

One local pastor says now is the time for congregations to get prepared for the worst.

"I know we are people of faith and a lot of times, as people of faith, we say, 'Well, you know, God's going to take care of us but the book of proverbs tells us a wise man will seek counsel,'" said Tyler Caines, pastor for Wampee Baptist Church.

The training will be held on Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. in the auditorium at Horry Georgetown Technical College.

It is free for anyone to attend, and police are encouraging anyone in the faith-based community to attend.

Police say separate training for business owners and the general public will be announced at a later date.
