Highway 544 reopens after car hit utility pole

Highway 544 was closed in both directions for nearly 7 hours after a driver hit a utility pole and crews worked to replace it Tuesday morning.

Highway 544 has reopened in both directions near SC 31 after a wreck involved a car hitting a utility pole early Tuesday morning.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the wreck happened just before 1 a.m. Crews reopened the highway around 7 a.m.

According to Horry County Police spokesperson Krystal Dotson, the driver who hit the utility pole was involved in a chase with police before the wreck.

Dotson says there are no suspects in custody at this time.

At least 800 people were without power at one point, according to Horry Electric Cooperative.

Officials with Horry County Fire Rescue also responded.

Crews are on scene cleaning up power lines and working to restore the pole that was hit.
