FLORENCE, S.C. (WPDE) — Florence 1 Schools has enhanced security measures to make sure students and staff members are safe.
New metal detectors are now installed at all of the middle and high schools in the district.
South Florence High School Principal Shand Josey said she's pleased with the new detectors.
"All of our students. As well as, all of our staff members enter through metal detectors either through the front door. Or through our gym. So, we are really pleased with the addition of our new metal detectors. And we feel very confident, that we have more students in a safe environment. And we are set up for a very safe and successful school year," said Josey.

The devices are EVOLV detectors.
“The technology powering the Evolv Express system is a combination of advanced sensors and artificial intelligence(AI). The sensors recognize objects, the artificial intelligence distinguishes those objects as either weapons or personal items, not humans. The security guards that manage the system are directed to the red/green light on the system, once that light turns red, the guard will review the image to confirm the location of the potential threat," said Dana Loof, chief marketing officer, Evolv Technology.
The district is also hauling off 150 of its mobile classrooms, as a part of its enhanced security measures.
The district is able to get rid of the portables through building new schools, expanding and renovating others, reconfiguring grades and repurposing spaces to create more classrooms.
Josey said she feels her school is a lot safer without mobile classrooms.
"The new safety improvements that we have. You know, that’s a huge priority for us this year. We were able to get rid of all of our mobiles. So all of our classes are inside this year. Which is huge when it comes to safety. We don’t ha have students transitioning in and out of our mobiles. So, we are able to keep them safe, inside the building," said Josey.
