Horry County Fire: 1 killed, 1 critically injured in car crash on Highway 707

Horry County fire officials say one person has died and another is critically injured after a car crash Friday evening.

According to the SC Highway Patrol website, the crash happened near the intersection of Highway 707 and Friendship Lane around 6:28 p.m.

In a tweet, Horry County Fire Rescue (HCFR) said their crews were responding to the crash.

HCFR initially said three cars were involved in the wreck. However, South Carolina Highway Patrol's Lance Corporal Matt Southern later stated that two vehicles were involved in the crash.

At the time of the crash, HCFR reported that one patient was trapped and there were at least two additional patients on scene.

In a follow-up tweet, HCFR said one person had died in the crash.

They also said two additional patients were treated on scene and taken to the hospital, one of whom had critical injuries.

In a release Friday night, Southern reported that the crash occurred when a driver heading north on Highway 707 crossed into the other line, hitting a car heading south.

As a result of the crash, Southern said the driver of the car heading north was partially ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to Grand Strand Medical Center.

Police blocked off a portion of Highway 707 while they dealt with the crash.

Officers on scene told area residents that it was going to be a while.

The crash remains under under investigation by South Carolina Highway Patrol.
