One person was killed in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night in Darlington County.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Golf Course and New Market Roads, according to Lt. Robbie Kilgo with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident report shows deputies responded to the area of the 3300 block of West Bobo Newsom Highway on reports of a man walking with a gun about 10 minutes to 7 p.m. Four deputies approached the suspect and gave verbal commands to drop his weapon, to which the suspect reportedly ignored.

The man kept walking and then turned towards deputies, according to the report, and the man stated something that deputies didn't understand.

Then, "when the suspect turned he was fired upon. The suspect was struck with gunfire and dropped to the ground," the report reads.

Kilgo said no deputies were injured, but Deputy Coroner James Jett said one man is dead. Coroner Todd Hardee identified the victim as 64-year-old Daryl Stickland, of Hartsville.

Darlington County Sheriff Tony Chavis has requested that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division conduct the investigation. SLED says they're interviewing responding officers and others involved. There is dashcam of the incident, though it's not clear when that will be released.

As is standard procedure, any deputies involved will be placed on administrative leave. Sheriff Chavis says any involved deputies will also receive counseling.

Wednesday night's shooting was the thirty-fourth officer-involved shooting in South Carolina this year and the second for the Darlington County Sheriff's Office. Last year, there were 43 statewide and two involving the DCSO.
