Horry County, S.C. (WPDE) — A 42-year-old man was shot and killed early Tuesday morning in the Myrtlewood area of Horry County, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden.
Mark Verhasselt was from Fayetteville, but lived in the Myrtle Beach area on and off for several years, McSpadden said.
He was killed by a gunshot wound near Wild Iris Drive and 48th Avenue North.
Witnesses told us that shortly after midnight they heard what they thought were fireworks, but turned out to be gunshots.
"At first I was like no they're not gunshots, but then I looked outside and there were two dudes chillin' at the bed of the truck," said Elijah Austin, who heard the shots outside of his front door.
After Austin took a closer look just outside his front door, that's when he said he realized what had happened.
"There was two dudes, but then there was the one dead," said Austin.
Witnesses said the three men were seen hanging out near a red pickup truck in a dark area of the parking lot moments before the shooting, and police towed that truck away as evidence.
