Clyburn announces run for Majority Whip

WASHINGTON -- House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is positioned to return to the speaker's office with her party's takeover of the House. But her election is not at all assured.

Some of the newly elected Democrats have pledged to vote against Pelosi. While she needs half of the House Democrats to make her the party's candidate, she also needs a majority of the full House to become speaker again. A slim majority leaves her little cushion.

Democrats who want new leadership have been whispering about it for weeks, and on Wednesday, several Pelosi opponents announced their intent to run for leadership posts in the party.

U.S. House Assistant Democratic Leader, James E. Clyburn, announced Wednesday his intent to run for Majority Whip.

In a letter, Clyburn wrote:

Last night, the American people sent a clear and powerful message, electing a democratic majority with a mandate to restore the fundamental goodness of our government. The primary goal of our new majority is to make America’s greatness apply fairly and equitably to all Americans. With this singular goal in mind, I am declaring my candidacy for Majority Whip and asking for your support.

House Republicans have leadership races, too. Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California is facing a challenge from Jim Jordan of Ohio for the top spot.
