Man, child found dead in Robeson County

A 22-year-old man and a young child have been found dead about a mile apart off McGirt's Bridge Road and Modest Road in the Maxton community of Robeson County, according to Robeson County Sheriff, Ken Sealey.

Sealey said their deaths are being treated as homicides.

He added the man's body was found near a pond off of McGirts Bridge Road and the child's body was found several hours later inside a burned pickup off of Modest Road.

The man and his nine-year-old relative left their home to go hunting just after 12:30 a.m. Monday morning, according to deputies.

Sealey said they're pretty sure the child found dead in the pickup is the man's 9-year-old relative, but they are waiting for autopsy results to confirm.

The victims names aren't being released at this point until positive identifications can be made on the bodies.

Some people in the Maxton community said they're afraid because there's been so much violence there in the past few months.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) along with the FBI are helping in the investigation .
