Asheville man accused of murdering girlfriend

An Asheville man has been charged with first-degree murder, according to Asheville police.

The Asheville Police Department reports officers responded to Walton Street at 2:43 a.m. Saturday after reports of a suicide attempt.

The officers found 54-year-old Alvin William Wilson at the scene, and say he was attempting to harm himself.

Wilson told officers he had harmed his girlfriend, 62-year-old Tina Marie Knighten, also of Asheville. Officers later found Knighten dead at a residence on nearby Bartlett Street.

Wilson is being treated at Mission Hospital for injuries sustained while attempting to injure himself.

He will be taken to the Buncombe County Detention Facility upon his release.
