
Florence, S.C. (WPDE) — Florence city police and Florence County sheriff's deputies have not released any information on the identity of the alleged shooter who killed one Florence city police officer and injured six other officers.
A source close to the investigation told ABC 15 that the man is 74-year-oldFrederick T. Hopkins, Jr.
ABC 15 Investigates tracked down public records regarding Hopkins and has compiled the information in this story.
As more information is released from police officials about who he is, why the shooting happened and what he is charged with, we will add to this story.
As of last check, Hopkins was still in the hospital after an injury from a fall during the two-hour standoff Wednesday, according to officials.
According to Hopkins' Facebook page, he is a Vietnam Veteran.
He was admitted to the SC Bar Association to be an attorney in 1980, but he was disbarred on June 22, 1984, according to public records.
A court order the South Carolina Supreme Court stated that on April 17, 1984 Hopkins was ordered to pay $18,000 within 30 days, which is approximately the amount of attorney fees he allegedly wrongfully collected.
The documents state he failed to fully pay the amount back and on June 5, he was found in contempt of court.
He was put in jail for a term of six months , but that was suspended upon the condition that he pay back the remaining money.
ABC 15 Investigates also checked on any criminal history for Hopkins in Florence County.
According to the 12th Judicial Circuit’s Public index, Hopkins paid a $161 fine in 2014 for a public disorderly conduct charge in the Florence Magistrate court.
In 2015, he was sentenced possibly twice to to 30 days in jail and fined on a running at large ordinance violation, according to the public index.
According to the State of South Carolina Supreme Court, in 2000, Hopkins sued Carol G. Hopkins, who is listed as his wife, for reimbursement of overpayments of child support, attorneys' fees and pre- and post-judgment interest.
According to the court documents, Frederick Hopkins married Carol Hopkins in 1967 and divorced in May 1983.
The case was appealed to the Supreme Court from Richland County family court and the Supreme Court decided he wasentitled to some reimbursed money for child support payments after his two children reached the age of 18.
In 2002, a case from Florence County made its way to the South Carolina Court of Appeals after Mr. Hopkins sued two people who he said improperly constructed his home in the Vintage Place Development.
The officer-involved shooting happened in the Vintage Place neighborhood, according to officials.
The South Carolina Court of Appeals sided with the Circuit Court and not with Mr. Hopkins.
As of 12:45 p.m. Thursday, Hopkins was not charged in the shooting because he was still in the hospital.
