3 Robeson Co. schools on lockdown

Three schools in Robeson County went under lockdown Friday afternoon following a shooting nearby.

Orrum Middle, R.B. Dean Elementary and Townsend Middle Schools went on lockdown at 2 Friday afternoon, according to Robeson County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Shanita Wooten.

Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said the schools are on lockdown due to a shooting in the area and they’re looking for the suspect.

Wilkins said deputies are in the process of escorting students to buses and those who ride in cars to their parents.

Wooten says there was a shooting near the Piggly Wiggly, which prompted the lockdown.

"The last communication from the Sheriff’s Office was that officers entered the home in or around Orrum where suspected shots were fired and determined shots were indeed fired from a shotgun. They have not found the person who fired shots," Wooten said in a statement. "Extra officers were placed at Orrum to allow students to be released slowly to their parents/guardians. The school and officers are working to get buses on the road as soon as possible."
