SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) - Berkeley County deputies have arrested a man in connection with the beating death of a 78-year-old Summerville man.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office says it arrested on Monday, June 4, Jerome Thomas, charging him with accessory after the fact to murder in the death of Neville Morgan.

Deputies said Morgan was found savagely beaten inside his home April 12, and died of his injuries the following day.

Berkeley County detectives said at the time they believed Morgan had been the target of a robbery because his credit and banking cards were missing following the assault.

Deputies say they later found the cards at a construction site in Moncks Corner, and determined Thomas had been in possession of them the same day as the assault. Deputies say Thomas had asked a friend to dispose of Morgan's cards.

Thomas had been a tenant of Morgan's, both living at Morgan's property on Sheep Island Road in Summerville.

Thomas is being held at the Hill Finklea Detention Center on a $50,000 surety bond, jail records show.

Morgan's murder remains under investigation. If you have any information about the case, please contact the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office at 843-719-4465, or Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111.
