5pm 10-12-17 Hurricane Ophelia still strengthening
Ophelia continues to strengthen and now has winds of 100 mph. It's the 10th consecutive named storm to become a hurricane this year and ties the record set in 1878 and equaled in 1886 & 1893.
Ophelia is NO threat to anyone on this side of the Atlantic ocean. This time of the year as the strong westerlies (steering winds from west to east) begin to descend southward, systems at that latitude generally move east or northeast. Based on the forecast track, the Azores could be impacted by the weekend. Ophelia loses its tropical characteristics Sunday but remains a powerful system as it brushes Ireland and Great Britain early next week.
Elsewhere, things are quiet in the tropics.
