Meteorologist Zach Covey brings you the weather on Good Morning Carolinas weekday mornings from 5-7 a.m. on ABC 15 and from 7-8 a.m. on CW21. He joined the team in January 2018 after moving from El Paso, Texas.
Zach is a military brat who followed his family around the globe, eventually landing in West Palm Beach, Florida.
From there, Zach took his talents to The Florida State University where he studied meteorology. He studied under some of the top tropical weather minds in the nation, with a core focus on trochoidal osciallations, or when a hurricane "wobbles" on it's track. He also took up a research interest in severe weather, focusing on how the changes that occur between daytime and nighttime can effect the intensity of a severe thunderstorm complex.
Zach began his TV career on the student-run weather broadcast "FSU Weather" on the local PBS station. His junior year of college, Zach became the weekend morning weather forecaster and weekday fill-in at the local CBS affiliate in Tallahassee, Florida.
He graduated from FSU in the spring of 2016 with his bachelor's degree in meteorology. After that, he packed up and left Tallahassee and headed to the wild west to become the weekend meteorologist and weekday multimedia journalist in El Paso, Texas. Zach got first hand experience covering severe weather from the monsoon season that hits the Southwest every Summer. In the Summer of 2017, Zach provided coverage of the approach and landfall of Hurricane Harvey, a storm which dumped a historic 40+" of rainfall in Houston and Beaumont and cost billions of dollars in damage to Texas.
Zach is excited to be back in the Southeast and provide his expertise when the forecast turns dire. He hopes his weather reports embody what you as a viewer look for from a knowledgeable and passionate weather team at WPDE.
