Newton ready to move into coaching

Syvelle Newton is finishing up his degree in Media Arts at the University of South Carolina and pursuing his ultimate goal - to be a high school football coach. Newton is working with the Gamecocks football team in spring drills as an undergraduate assistant.

Newton played four different positions at South Carolina from 2003-2006, playing quarterback, running back, wide receiver and defensive back. He had over 4,000 all purpose yards in his college career and accounted for 33 touchdowns (20 TD passes, 10 TD runs, 3 TD catches). He also had 20 career tackles in the secondary. Newton never got an opportunity to play in the NFL, but did have a career in Arena Football.

Newton won WPDE's Zoneman Trophy in 2001 and 2002 joining Notre Dame quaterback Everett Golson as the only two-time winners of WPDE's top football honor.
