Holbrook era ready to begin at South Carolina

South Carolina opens the 2013 season this Friday at home against the Liberty Flames. Chad Holbrook will make his debut as South Carolina's head coach taking over for Ray Tanner. Holbrook spent five years as the associate head coach under Tanner and is regarded as one of college baseball's top recruiters.

Holbrook spoke with WPDE's Mark Haggard last week and focused on the local players who are going to make an impact on the USC roster. Former Saint James Shark Tanner English, who started in left field as a freshman is set to move to centerfield and is now switch hitting. Gamecocks running back and Lake City native Shon Carson is expected to make the roster and be in the outfield mix. Another football/baseball star, Kwinton Smith out of Dillon, may be redshirted this year, but has impressed Holbrook. Conway's Colby Holmes will be the anchor of the Gamecocks starting pitching rotation.
