COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Jordan Montgomery allowed five hits over eight innings to lead South Carolina to a 5-2 victory over Campbell on Friday night, the Gamecocks' 28th straight home NCAA tournament win.
Left-hander Montgomery (8-5) tied his season high with nine strikeouts and improved to 5-0 all-time in NCAA games the past three seasons. The Gamecocks (43-16) face Maryland (37-21) in a winner's bracket game Saturday.
The Camels (40-20) will try and stay alive in their first NCAA regional since 1990 when they take on Old Dominion (36-25) in an elimination game.
Shortstop Marcus Mooney and first baseman Kyle Martin had two RBIs each to power South Carolina, which has not lost at home in the NCAAs since 2002.
Campbell had two on in the ninth and twice brought the tying run to the plate. But Gamecocks closer Joel Seddon struck out Elijah Trail and Aaron Vogt to end the game.
