Gamecocks spank Liberty at NCAA Regional

Tanner English hit his first college home run in the Gamecocks win over Liberty.

Three bases-loaded walks in the first inning by Liberty starting pitcher Books Roy allowed South Carolina to get out to a 3-0 lead, on the way to an easy 19-3 victory over the Flames, in a winners bracket game on day two of the NCAA Columbia Regional, before a crowd of 7,816 fans at Carolina Stadium.

Connor Bright added to the Gamecocks lead with a two-run single in the third inning. Former St. James High star Tanner English capped the four-run frame with a two-run homer, the first of his college career. English went 3-for-6 with three RBI's.

South Carolina went on to score nine runs in the eighth inning. They pounded out 19 hits on the night to only six for the Flames. Kyle Martin went 3-for-5 at the plate. He homered and drove in four runs for the Gamecocks.

Gamecocks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery (5-1) struck out six batters over the first two innings. He ended up with 11 strikeouts over seven innings of shutout ball.

South Carolina (41-18) has now won 26 consecutive post season home games.

South Carolina is just one win away from making it to the NCAA Super Regionals. The Gamecocks will play the winner of the Clemson-Liberty losers bracket game on Sunday night at 7 p.m. for the Columbia Regional Championship. Clemson (40-21) or Liberty (35-28) will have to beat the Gamecocks on Sunday to force a winner-take-all game on Monday.
