Frank Martin is an assistant coach for the United States men's basketball entry in the World University Games. Martin is joined by John Beilein of Michigan as assistants to head coach Bob McKillop of Davidson. Martin arrived in Colorado Springs on Monday where 26 players are vying for 12 spots on the US roster. The team features some of the top talent in college basketball. The US begins pool play on July 7th in Kazan, Russia against the United Arab Erimates.
"It's going to be great," Martin said. "I'm so excited. The players that have been invited and accepted invitations are big-time. And then being around Bob McKillop. Coaches learn from players so much. Everybody thinks it's a one-sided relationship.
"As a coach, when you get around real good players, you just learn so much. You learn how to teach better, you learn how to understand things better. Real good players understand. When you're trying to help them, they challenge your thought process. They comprehend. They don't just do it to do it. They understand what they're doing. So, if you're listening as a coach, you learn."
Martin will miss the first week of the summer recruiting period, but says his assistant coaches will be active and he'll hit the ground running during the second weekend.
