Gamecocks avoid upset thanks to Pankake's walk off blast

Joey Pankake led off the ninth inning with a walk off home run to left center to give the Gamecocks a 6-5 win over the Citadel on Tuesday night. The Citadel came back from a 5-2 deficit to score three runs in the 9th to tie the game, but Pankake deposited the second pitch of the inning over the wall to give the Gamecocks the victory.

The Citadel jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a Bo Thompson 2 run double down the left field line. Gamecocks starter Joel Seddon was chased in the third inning. Vince Fiori pitched 4 1/3 shutout innings in relief. South Carolina got on the board in the 5th with a Dante Rosenberg solo HR to left. Murrells Inlet product Tanner English scored on a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-2 game in the 5th. It appeared that the Gamecocks were going to pull away in the 7th when Brison Celek delivered a pinch hit RBI single followed by a Greyson Greiner 2 run double to make it 5-2.

But the Citadel answered with three runs in the ninth highlighted by a two run single by Cheraw native Jonathan Stokes. The Bulldogs left 12 runners on base including a chance to pull ahead in the ninth. The Gamecocks improve to 27-7 on the season. English was 2-4 with a run scored in the victory.
