Dunes Club ready for Carolinas Amateur Championship

Gamecock Logan Harrell is back to defend his title

Jonathan Byrd, Chip Beck and Leonard Thompson of PGA Tour fame are just a few of the previous winners at the 101 year old Carolinas Amateur Championship. South Carolina Gamecocks rising sophomore Logan Harrell returns to defend the 2010 title he won at Pinehurst (NC) Resort's No. 8 course. This year's 4-day event will be at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach July 14-17.

The field of 144 players also includes local players Austin Frick from St. James High and Johnson Holliday from Aynor High. The Carolinas Amateur was a match play competition until last year when the format was changed to stroke play.

The Carolinas Golf Association received 457 entries for the 2011 championship which is open to male amateurs who are legal residents from either North Carolina or South Carolina. The players must be at least 13 years of age, be in good standing with the CGA and have a current handicap index of 5.4 or less at a CGA member club.

The par-72 Dunes Club is a Robert Trent Jones layout that will play 6,978 yards during this upcoming tournament.
