Area Players Win Super Bowl Rings

Former Richmond Raider Dannell Ellerbe led the Ravens defense with 9 tackles.

The Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 to win Super Bowl XLVII at the Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday.

Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco threw three TD passes, completing 22-of-33 passes for 287 yards. He was named Super Bowl MVP.

Ravens fullback Vonta Leach, who was born in Lumberton, North Carolina and attended South Robeson High, caught three passes for 10 yards. The 31-year old veteran also had one carry for one yard, and was a key blocker during running plays and pass protection.

Leach is recognized as the best fullback on the planet. He was undrafted in 2004, after playing college ball at East Carolina. The nine-year veteran has been named NFL All-Pro three straight years. He signed a 3-year, 11-million dollar contract with the Ravens in July, 2011, making him the highest paid player at his position in the NFL.

Dannell Ellerbe, a native of Hamlet, North Carolina, made nine tackles to lead the Ravens defense. Ellerbe, a four-year NFL veteran inside linebacker, attended Richmond Senior High School in Rockingham.

Ellerbe, 27, was an undrafted free agent out of Georgia in 2009.

Former South Carolina Gamecocks star Chris Culliver made four tackles for San Francisco.
