Wieland K's 9, Birds hit three homers to win 4th in a row

Pelicans catcher Vincent DiFazio hangs on to nail Wilmington's Carlo Testa in the 6th inning.

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Wilmington Blue Rocks 4-0 on Saturday night at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach. Pelicans starting pitcher Joseph Wieland struck out nine over seven innings of work and allowed just five hits. More impressively, Wieland did not walk a batter. He has not issued a free pass since April 18th. That is a span of 48 and a third innings, fourth best in all of professional baseball.

The Birds provided plenty of offense. Jared Prince homered in the 2nd inning to give Myrtle Beach a 1-0 lead. In the 4th, Vincent DiFazio homered to make it 2-0. In the 6th, Mike Olt rocked the house with a 2-run jack over the Landshark Landing seating section to complete the scoring. Myrtle Beach has now won four straight games. They have the best overall record in the Carolina League at 29-19.

The Pelicans will try for a three game sweep of the Blue Rocks on Sunday at 6:05 p.m.
