Pelicans Clinch Playoff Berth

Pelicans celebrate after learning that they had clinched the first half division title.

It was not how they wanted it to happen. The Myrtle Beach Pelicans had just lost to the Carolina Mudcats 8-2, ending an eight game win streak. But when the game was over, the Pelicans players learned that second place Winston-Salem had lost their game, which clinched the first half championship in the Southern Division of the Carolina League for Myrtle Beach, and an automatic berth in the league playoffs at the end of the season.

The Pelicans took a 2-0 lead, only to have the Mudcats rally for eight unanswered runs to win game one of a double-header, at Field in Myrtle Beach.

The Pelicans players ran to the clubhouse immediately following the loss. Once inside, the team began to cheer uncontrollably for more than a minute.

The Pelicans then returned to the field and won the nightcap 5-1 to earn a split of the double-header with the Mudcats. Myrtle Beach now has a record of 39-29 with one game to play before the Carolina League All-Star break.

This is the third consecutive year that the Pelicans have qualified for the postseason, and the seventh time in franchise history.
