First Place Pelicans Fly Past Keys

Alex Gonzalez fanned five batters over eight innings of shutout ball on Saturday night.

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans defeated the Frederick Keys 4-1 behind eight shutout inning from Alex Gonzalez (2-2), before a crowd of 4,429 at Pelicans Ballpark.

Gonzalez allowed five hits and struck out five batters to lower his season ERA to 2.80. Alex Claudio picked up his first save of the season.

Odubel Herrera broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with an RBI single to give the Pelicans the lead. Herrera drove in two runs on the night.

Myrtle Beach scored three more runs in the seventh inning. Hanser Alberto singled to score Jorge Alfaro and Nick Williams to make the score 3-0. Herrera added an insurance run with an RBI ground out.

The Pelicans (17-10) have the best record in the Carolina League. They lead the Southern Division of the Carolina League by two games over the second place Salem Red Sox.
