Coastal Carolina came from behind to score a 45-38 win over Charleston Southern on Saturday. Sunday, on WPDE's David Bennett Show, the Chants head coach praised Jamie Childers for his four catch, two TD effort against the Bucs. Childers, who played his high school football at Wando in the Charleston area, was surprised at the game by his younger brother Daniel, who was serving overseas for the Marines in Afghanistan.
After trailing 21-14 at the half, Bennett saw his offensive line set the tone in the third quarter resulting in Marcus Whitener topping 100 yards for the first time this season. Cheraw's Travis Small had a career high 74 yards on the ground, including a seven yard TD run to break a 31-31 tie. The Chants ran for 253 yards, the most for the year.
With the win, Coastal is assured of a winning record for the first time since 2006. The Chants wrap up the 2011 season out of conference with a trip to Western Carolina. Bennett explained on his show that they had just two choices of games in this slot with the other option being a guarantee game at Alabama. Instead, CCU opts to close out the year at the Southern Conference school.
